Listen Play Grow

A 6-Month Foundation for Playing by Ear

Finally hear what’s happening in music and play with freedom, connection, and confidence.

Start at Week One - Join Anytime

🌱 Start in a Different way

Most musicians begin with good intentions:

  • Promising themselves they’ll finally work on their ear.

  • Opening a book or video course.

  • Feeling slightly overwhelmed.

  • Slipping back into old habits.

This isn’t that.

This is a clear, structured, human way to learn to play by ear — designed especially for adult musicians who want to experience real musical freedom, connection, and confidence again.

🌳 Who This Is For

The Listen, Play, Grow Foundation is for:

  • Adult hobbyist musicians (UK and international, mostly 50+)

  • Guitarists, pianists, singers, and instrumentalists of all kinds

  • Musicians who struggle to play by ear

  • Those tired of relying on notation and wanting more freedom

  • People who’ve leaned heavily on theory but feel disconnected from real music-making

  • Musicians who feel plateaued, stuck, or lacking confidence

  • Those who want to improvise but don’t know where to begin

  • Anyone who wants to play with others, accompany themselves, or simply enjoy their instrument again

If you've ever thought:

“I’ve played for years, but I still can’t play by ear.”

This Foundation was built for you.

🌼 What You’ll Learn in the First 12 Weeks

These first 12 weeks form Part 1 of the 6-month Listen, Play, Grow Foundation

We focus on essential musical foundations - practical, ear-led, and applied to real music.

1. Hearing I–IV–V movement (the backbone of most music)

You’ll learn to feel and recognise chord movement through simple listening tasks and singing exercises. Not theory diagrams.

2. Hearing and Singing Core Musical Lines

Short melodic fragments, bass movement, and functional patterns.
Not complex jazz lines. Clear, memorable musical shapes you can actually use.

3. Building rhythmic confidence

Through short two-bar phrases, call-and-response patterns, and practical groove work.
So your playing feels steadier, more natural, and more expressive.

4. Playing simple songs by ear

No notation.
No guessing.
Listening → understanding → playing.

5. Light, Musical improvisation

No scale overload.
No theory walls.

Just small rhythmic and melodic ideas that grow into confident improvisation.

By the end of Part 1, you’re starting to hear how music moves in a way that transfers across keys, songs, and instruments.

🌹 What Happens in Months 4–6?

In Part 2, we expand beyond I–IV–V and build deeper musical flexibility.

You’ll explore:

  • The 2, 3, and 6 chords and how they function

  • Minor tonal movement and modal colour (without theory overload)

  • Stronger root recognition across more varied progressions

  • Applying your ear skills to a wider range of real songs

  • More confident, structured improvisation

This is where the foundations begin to feel transferable across more keys, more styles, and more musical situations.

🌿 A Clear Structure That Helps You Grow

Each week follows the Listen Play Grow rhythm:

  • Exploring the Garden — 4 days of small, accumulative learning

  • Tending the Garden — 1 day of recap, reflection, and strengthening what you've worked on

  • Mucking About — 1 relaxed day of playful improvisation and musical curiosity

This is steady work.
And you move through it at your own pace.

🌱 You Can’t Fall Behind Here

This Foundation is built for real life — not an ideal calendar.

  • Catch-up space is built into the structure.

  • If you miss days — or even a week — that’s fine.

  • There is no “behind.”

  • You move at your pace.

  • Holidays, busy stretches, illness — all part of life.

You’ll have 12 weeks in Part 1 and access to continue when you’re ready.

“There’s no pressure to get things right — just to explore.”— Annie, UK

The learning builds steadily and it allows for real life.

🌿 A Supportive Community

You’ll join a small group of thoughtful musicians — curious, encouraging, and serious about improving.

Inside the programme you’ll have:

  • Your own private practice space in Slack (just you and me)

  • Dedicated channels for questions, improvisation, wins, and sharing

  • Weekly small-group calls where you’re never put on the spot

  • Direct messaging support if you get stuck

“The calls are the highlight of my week. The community is so supportive.”— Jack, Canada

You’ll be part of a space that takes your musicianship seriously.

🌟 Real Stories From Real Learners

From relying on sheet music to real musical freedom

“I’d spent years unable to play without notation. Within a few weeks of working with Andy’s approach, I’d already learned three songs by ear and at a comfortable pace.

For the first time in my life I’m writing my own music.”— David, Japan

From classical reading to hearing chord progressions naturally

“I came in as a classical trumpet player with no idea how to improvise. Andy guided me from simple root movements all the way to transcribing a Chet Baker solo.

By the end, I had the confidence to walk into a jazz jam session and play.”— Keven, USA

From years of self-doubt to recording her own album

“I spent years feeling slow and ‘not musical enough.’

Now I learn folk songs quickly, choose keys that suit my voice, accompany myself, and even harmonise melodies naturally.

I’m currently recording an album — something I never imagined.”— Kay, Scotland

From nervous and unsure to confident, expressive guitarist-singer

“I joined as a nervous beginner who wanted to sing but lacked confidence. Andy’s ‘no pressure to get it right’ approach changed everything.

Within months, I played my first open mic, and now I’m writing and sharing my own songs.”— Annie, UK

🌟 What Makes Listen Play Grow Different?

Most ear training is:

  • abstract

  • theoretical

  • interval-based

  • disconnected from real music

This isn’t that.

Listen Play Grow is:

  • Grounded in real musical sound

  • Built on Do-based hearing and root movement

  • Cumulative and practical

  • Focused on musical feeling, not rule memorisation

  • Built around repetition, curiosity, and real songs

  • Designed for adult musicians who think they’ve “missed the musicality boat”

You don’t need to memorise endless scales.
You don’t need to master theory first.
You don’t need to be a confident singer.
You need curiosity — and the willingness to listen differently.

🌱 What Changes After Six Months?

Imagine reaching the end of the Foundation knowing:

  • You can hear what songs are doing

  • You can play simple tunes by ear

  • You can accompany yourself confidently

  • You can improvise small musical ideas with ease

  • You feel connected to your instrument again

  • You’re no longer stuck in old patterns

That’s what the Listen, Play, Grow Foundation is for.
